Tom from YouKnowIGotSoul.com recently caught up with Mya to discuss her new album, being an independent business woman/artist, and the worldwide release of K.I.S.S. Check out an excerpt below and read the full interview here.
YouKnowIGotSoul: How did you approach the creation of the “K.I.S.S.” album compared to your previous albums?
Mya: Just like “Sugar & Spice” and “Beauty & the Streets Vol. 1”, I was also the executive producer for “K.I.S.S”. That entails scouting the producers, songwriters, arranging the album track listing, keeping track of the accounting. “Sugar & Spice” was catered more to Japan’s distinct sound & market, but approaching “K.I.S.S.”, I wanted to make a classic Mya album even if it meant digging deeper into my pockets. This album has a balance of mid-tempos, up-tempos, slow jams and great production. As fun as this album is, there’s also lots of substance to be discovered lyrically, without getting bored or depressed.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Talk about what’s included on the U.S. version of the album.
Mya: There are about six new songs on the U.S./Canada version. The world version becomes available February 14, 2012.
Jadore of Jadore’s Liife checked back in with Mya to gather some behind-the-scenes details about her career and K.I.S.S. Check out the excerpt below and click here to read the full interview. To read Mya’s first interview with Jadore’s Liife.com, click here.
Q: As a fan of your music I have to gush over my favorite track “Mess up my Hair” – what was your favorite on this album?
A: Haaaaa! It’s hard to just choose 1 song. So I divide it up like this.
Favorite Club Banger: Earthquake f/Trina produced by Young Yonny Favorite Substance Record: Evolve produced by Lee Major Favorite Sexy Slow Jam: Can I produced by Snatch & Grab
Q: Anytime you start working on a new album, is it still just as exciting as the last? How does Mya know she has a good thing on her hands when it comes to music?
A: Oh yeah. The last 4 years have been a playground for me musically. It’s so exciting having my own studio – limitless creative space at my disposal. When it comes to music, I have listening parties at my studio with girlfriends, dancers, the crew, etc. They tell me what they like, love, don’t care for. And I also have exclusive online listening parties with fans. At the end of the day, I know I have something good on my hands when I perform it before it’s available & people ask where they can go buy it.

Mya also sat down with Coolgrrrls to talk about K.I.S.S., her creative influences, early moments in her career, philanthropy, and much more. Check out an excerpt below:
Q. You express many talents. When did you first realize that you wanted to become an entertainer and what form of entertainment was your first passion – singing, dancing, modeling, acting?
The first time I knew in my heart that I wanted to sing was at the age of 4 while I watched my Dad rehearse in church on Easter Eve. As far as entertainment is concerned, I was 10 years old when I saw my first Broadway show “Jelly’s Last Jam” starring Gregory Hines in New York City. That’s when I knew that I wanted to explore the vast array of the arts- signing, acting, dancing, writing, playing an instrument, stage production, make-up, wardrobe, etc. I enjoy the entire process & seeing a final product come to life. Being able to share it & impact others is like hott fudge with a jumbo cherry on top.
Q. What was your first professional performance and can you tell us a little bit about it?
My first professional performance was probably at the age of 4 or 5 when I hustled my mother for either $10 or a Happy Meal at McDonald’s to get my little, stubborn behind on stage… I was negotiating early (laughs).
Here are a few photos of Mya arriving to her album release party for K.I.S.S. at Club Play in Miami. Click on the preview below to see the full set.
Below is an excerpt from Mya’s interview with Four8Media. During the interview Mya talks about her recent music projects (Sugar & Spice, Beauty & the Streets, and K.I.S.S.), her creative process, and more.
For the fans who’ve been missing you, why the hiatus from the U.S music scene?
In 2004, after the Moodring album, I ended up in a year long litigation with management. In late 2005, I made a transition within the Universal system from Interscope to Motown. In 2007 my 4th album “Liberation” was accidentally released in Japan when the release date changed. At the time I was with Motown/Universal and my lawyer advised that I don’t waste time & money taking the issue to court, so I decided to go independent instead. Japan loved the “Liberation” album so much, that a company by the named Manhattan Records located there approached me about doing business with them. I released my first independent project titled “Sugar & Spice: a year later after my split with Motown in Japan in 2008, The Perfect Edition double disc set in 2009 also in Japan, my first mixtape Beauty & the Streets Vol 1 stateside in 2010. In April 2011, I released the 4th independent compilation “K.I.S.S.” (Keep It Sexy & Simple). And this December, I released the US Deluxe version of K.I.S.S. via iTunes. So while it appears I’ve just stopped or have been on some hiatus, I’m very much releasing a musical project every year, either internationally because that’s where the free opportunity & support has been, or stateside under the radar until I find the right situation that will provide the proper support.
